Black Ops 3: Dr. Monty Explained

A look at who Dr. Monty is in the Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 storyline.

The Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Zombies community have been hard at work piecing together pieces of information regarding the Black Ops 3 Zombies storyline and characters. Out of that narrative came familiar faces like those of Dr. Ludvig Maxis, Dr. Edward Richtofen, Tank Dempsey, Nikolai Belinski, Takeo Masaki, and Samantha. With Black Ops 3’s launch, we were introduced to a brand new character in the Zombies story arch, one that was rather unique to the game.

Introduced via the GobbleGum system, Dr. Monty and his factory help create the GobbleGums players use during their various forays of survival in Black Ops 3 Zombies. With the release of Gorod Krovi in the Black Ops 3 Descent DLC expansion, various secrets came to light including the formal introduction and interjection of Dr. Monty.

Who is Dr. Monty?

Dr. Monty was first visualized from his factory, one that so many players went to daily to try and test their luck with the best GobbleGums. For a long while, many players thought that perhaps this is all we would see of the elusive Dr. Monty while others believed there had to be more to the story of this character. Sure enough, Gorod Krovi gave us the additional information we were looking for regarding the mysterious Dr. Monty.

Dr. Monty is never revealed to us in a visual form, and instead occupies the role of a new narrator in the Black Ops 3 Zombies storyline. There are multiple quotes from him throughout Gorod Krovi, some of which are level based, others that are Easter Egg-based, and even a few odd quotes that occur when a specific act is done. Each of these quotes offer a personal look into the mind of Dr. Monty, many of which provide insight to the Zombies storyline such as:

“Alright! So you’ve got this universe; this big, change-y already volatile universe… and then you shatter it with a hammer. A metaphorical hammer – and it cracks and splinters into a million other universes, all coexisting at exactly the same time. Do you have any idea how difficult that is to keep track of? I may be omnipotent, but I can’t be everywhere”

This quote is user activated, located by shooting an orb outside of the tank factory. This quote is directly related to the fabric of the Zombies storyline, and also provides insight into the character of Dr. Monty. Dr. Monty claims to be omnipotent, meaning that he is an all-knowing persona. At first, it seems like Monty's power to oversee everything works towards the greater good. However, it’s quite possible that Dr. Monty is doing the exact opposite, and may prove to be a villain in the Black Ops 3 Zombies storyline.

Dr. Monty in the Zombies Storyline

Up until the release of Black Ops 3’s Zetsubou No Shima Zombies map, the community collectively thought there had to be some twist, that the blood vials Richtofen was collecting pertained to some alternative plan. Some even felt like Maxis failing to disclose bits of information to Richtofen may point to someone getting double-crossed later on in the story. While this may still prove to be a possibility, it seems more likely that Dr. Monty is in fact the direct threat to our characters’ plans to mend the universe.

Deception seems to be his forte as another string of quotes happen once you hit round 15 where downed players can activated three different audio cues. During this process, Monty will start your character’s direct line of communication by appealing to their intimate side, talking them up and making them feel good or directly sympathizing with them. However, in the final quotes to Nikolai, Takeo, and Dempsey, Monty makes it evident that they should keep an eye on Richtofen. He refers to the others that two members of the group may be scheming.

“So, besides the changes in your own outlook, have you noticed a change in Richtofen? Dempsey? Well, I’m not trying to stir things up but, does it seem to you like the two of them may be scheming between themselves?”

Dr. Monty appears to be trying to tear the group apart for reasons unknown by planting the seeds of doubt. There’s no clear motive for Dr. Monty’s attempts to sow discord among the Black Ops 3 Zombies characters, or even if the attempt will work. However, it seems like Dr. Monty holds insight on which nerves to hit to achieve this goal. Some have speculated that perhaps Monty is similar to the Shadow Man, a being of omnipotent background that is a master of deception.

This seems like a pretty accurate description of Dr. Monty based on what we can infer as of now. Whether or not he’s similar or perhaps even the same character has yet to be revealed. The only thing that is absolutely certain is that Dr. Monty will be making a large return in Black Ops 3 DLC 4. No matter how the story unfolds, the conclusion (or cliffhanger) to the Zombies storyline in DLC 4 will likely prove to be a treat for all Zombies players.
